New Brunswick’s popular burger joint, BurgerFi has permanently closed after opening its first New Jersey location over 18 months ago.
The restaurant located at 385 George St, was served a warrant of removal September 29th due to failure to pay rent according to the Middlesex County Landlord-Tenant Court. According to the court documents, the restaurant stopped paying its rent January 2015. The restaurant is now defunct with an eviction notice on its door leaving customers and employees wondering what went wrong.
One BurgerFi employee, Hayley Livingston, said she was not given any notification that the restaurant would close.
“I’m pissed because they still owe me three weeks’ worth of pay. I saw the eviction notice on the door, but the managers or owners haven’t told any of the employees anything. I kept texting the manager and he just said to give him a couple days,” she said.
The restaurant was managed by Bijen Patel. According to the BurgerFi website, the franchise originated in Florida in 2011 and now has 77 locations nationwide. This was its first restaurant in New Jersey.
