New Brunswick Man Charged in Stabbing Death

nbpdA 32-year-old New Brunswick man has been charged with stabbing another city man to death during a 4th of July dispute at a local restaurant.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department, announced the arrest Monday of Edgar Martinez, who was charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Jovanni Garcia-Elvira, 20, was stabbed multiple times during a dispute at El Coteno on Suydam Street at 4:09 a.m.

He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 5 a.m. on July 4, officials said.

Martinez was arrested on Joyce Kilmer Avenue shortly after the fight, officials said. He  is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick on $2 million bail.
