17-year-old New Brunswick Resident Gunned Down in Franklin

New Brunswick resident Joell Burton, 17, was shot and killed in a church parking near his home. The incident took place on Oct. 13 at approximately 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens on Somerset Street according to New Brunswick Today.
According to NJ.com, Burton suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Burton’s mother Tina Riley said that she could not even understand why someone would want to hurt her son.

According to NJ.com:

“I didn’t think he had any enemies,” Burton’s mother told News 12. “We don’t know the exactly what the issue is.”

The following day the New Brunswick Police arrested 19-year–old Dequan S. Rogers of Franklin Township. The police charged him with Burton’s murder.

According to mycentraljersey.com:

“Rogers was arrested on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun. Bail was set by the Superior Court Judge Yolanda Ciccone at $500,000 cash only.”

The funeral services for Burton will be set for Friday Oct. 24 at 9 a.m. at the First Baptist of Lincoln Gardens Church on 771 Somerset Street, according to his obituary.
