Rutgers University has become the most highly subsidized sports program at a public university in the country, depending on university subsidies for funds, taking it from the school’s academic budget, according to a report by the website Muckgers. Bloomberg News calculated that Rutgers Athletics’ $28 million university subsidy was almost equivalent to taking $1,000 from each student’s tuition bill for athletic purposes. According to a NCAA financial report, the university’s subsidy to athletics increased by 67.9% since last year, and is now at $47 million.
