A local resident sustained minor injuries after being pistol-whipped during a home invasion on Louis Street on Thursday morning.

Police said three men broke into the house, located between Hamilton and Somerset streets, at about 3:30 a.m., asked for valuables and assaulted one of the residents with the handle of a handgun before leaving.

New Brunswick Police are investigating, but the Rutgers Police Department issued an alert to students about the incident because “the victims are affiliated with the university.” RUPD is urging residents to be aware of surroundings, walk in groups when traveling late at night and immediately report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

Information on what, if anything, was stolen was not released, but police said narcotics were present at the scene. A description of the three men is “limited at this time, police said. The injured resident was treated at a nearby hospital.

Police are asking that anyone with information call the New Brunswick Police Department at 732-745-5200.
